Capcom has partnered with Niantic for Monster Hunter Now, which uses augmented reality to bring the series into the real world. The game will have the series’ core gameplay — you fight strange monsters to collect their fur and skeleton, then use it to make stronger armor and weapons for yourself. But it’s a big task to carry on the series’ legacy and make combat feel satisfying in 75-second bouts, as developer Niantic senior producer Sakae Osumi told Digital Trends.
The closed beta will launch on April 25th, and players can sign up for it on the Monster Hunter Now website. They’ll need to fill out a form that lists their email address, region, device type, and more. Prospective testers can also expect to receive closed beta invitations throughout the testing period.
In the mobile game, you’ll be able to play solo or with friends. You’ll get to choose from a number of weapon and armor sets, and your character will have a Palico companion that can help with movement or tracking down monsters. You’ll also be able to access a variety of missions that will give you new quests and items.
Monster Hunter Now is an excellent take on the series for mobile. Its streamlined gameplay is a perfect fit for smartphones, and its use of augmented reality brings the action to your real-world surroundings. It’s a fun and enjoyable entry into the franchise, although fans will have to wait for more content to arrive in the future.
